Abstract
In Exploring Family Theories , Third Edition , Suzanne R. Smith and Raeann R. Hamon explore selected family theories and provide a framework for differentiating the theories from each other. The book consists of an Introduction, ten chapters, and an Epilogue. In the Introduction, the authors begin by defining theory and family theory. Starting at this level will be helpful for students who will read this book in an introductory course on family theories. The authors explain the functions of theories and some basic theory construction concepts. The section on criteria by which theories can be evaluated is useful in framing a suitable evaluative framework. Also useful is the discussion of how family theories differ from theories associated with other social groups. After the Introduction, each chapter is about a specific family theory. The chapters follow a uniform outline, including opening vignette, a concise history of the theory, assumptions, terms and concepts, areas of research, critique, and application. Each chapter closes with a sample reading that is intended to illustrate the utility of the theory for research. Some aspects of each chapter may be identified as particularly noteworthy. In Chapter 1, the authors focus on symbolic interactionism theory.
